Narrative

Back when business was still a man's world, Adella's Millinery blazed a trail for women entrepreneurs.

Adella's was run by Mary Adele MacLellan, who worked in Montreal and New York before returning to Charlottetown. Mary ran a millinery shop - first on Grafton Street and after a fire wiped her out, she started again on lower Queen Street. She partnered with milliner Ella Connolly, and they combined their names - Adele and Ella - to come up with "Adella's".

The millinery was a fixture in downtown Charlottetown, operating from the early 1950s until the mid 1970s, providing fashionable hats and accessories to Island women.
