DescriptionTwo large, rectangles of wood with nails jutting from the exterior sides – 19 on the first and 11 on the second. The two boards are attached to each other by metal wire wrapped around nails in the bottom corners. The front board has faded black lettering for “Dutch Thread / Pounds 288”. A wire stretches between two nails in each of the top corners. The reverse of the front board as well as the second board are unmarked.
Narrative
These fragments of wood are believed to be part of an armament box which was used in 1758 as part of an Acadian defence during the Seven Years War. In 1758, the British gained control of Ile Saint-Jean from the French, which ultimately led to the forced removal of Acadians from the island.
