The first official nursing school in the province was at the Prince Edward Island Hospital in 1891, which was also among the first in Canada. Several schools of nursing opened throughout PEI over the next 100 years and in the 1960s the Association of Nurses of PEI began to push for a centralized system of training. The result was the Prince Edward Island School of Nursing which operated from 1969-1994 before becoming part of the University of Prince Edward Island's nursing sciences program.
In 1991 the Prince Edward Island Hospital School of Nursing celebrated its 100th Anniversary with festivities for former graduates as well as personalized buttons.
