The Prince of Wales college opened in it original form (the Central Academy) in 1835 and was renamed the Prince of Wales College in 1860. In 1879 the college became co-educational and merged with the Normal School. In September 1969 The Prince of Wales College and Saint Dunstan's University official merged to for University of Prince Edward Island.
