In 1860, the Central Academy, located in Charlottetown, was renamed Prince of Wales College in commemoration of the Prince of Wales’s visit to Prince Edward Island. The College served as a junior college, offering the final two years of high school, the first two years of university, as well as a school for teachers. In 1932, Prince of Wales College suffered from a devastating fire which destroyed the school’s main building. Classes were moved to the Queen Square and Prince Street Schools while a new building could be constructed which opened in 1933. The new Prince of Wales College building is presently part of Holland College’s Prince of Wales Campus, located on Cumberland Street in Charlottetown. In the late 1960s, the College amalgamated with St. Dunstan’s University to become the University of Prince Edward Island.
