Narrative
Named after Lord Fredrick Stanley, Canada's sixth Governor General, the S.S. Stanley was launched in 1888 as an ice-breaking ferry and served ports in PEI, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. At 207 feet with 1900 horsepower, the S.S. Stanley was more reliable in harsh winter conditions than its predecessors. During the winter of 1902-1903 the S.S. Stanley became lodged in ice and was stranded for 66 days. The SS Stanley served the Northumberland Strait crossing from 1888-1909.
