On April 25, 1955, Charlottetown's newest department store, Eaton's of Canada opened their doors and would serve Islanders until 1998.
The new Charlottetown store was said to be the one of the most modern stores in the country. Each of the departments hosted special sales for their opening day including Frigidaire Refrigerators for $266, Radio Phonographs for $39.99, and "fashion-wise" women's shoes for only $5.99.
The opening of Eaton's in Charlottetown meant increased competition for local department stores such as Holman's and Moore & McLeod's. By the 1960s, retail sales in chain stores had tripled on PEI, and many local stores were forced to close their doors.
Timothy Eaton pioneered the home delivery services that are now commonplace. The first catalogues were launched in 1884 and all manner of goods were now available for mail delivery, even houses! In 1999, Eaton's declared bankruptcy and the company shares were taken over by Sears who turned Eaton's stores in Sears.
