Narrative
The Telephone Company of Prince Edward Island was incorporated in 1885 and managed by Robert Angus. By 1889, the Company had outgrown their office space and moved to the Hyndman Building at 57 Queen Street and later to 227 Queen to their building in 1930. The first Island phone book was published in 1905 as the company switched from directory cards. 1,000 copies of the new phone book were printed which also included spaces for business advertisements. Popularity for the convenience of telephones grew on PEI, and by 1919 there were over 40 privately owned local telephone companies. Over time, the Telephone Company of PEI began acquiring smaller companies and grew from 4,072 phones in service to 25,000 in 1964, with all 40 having been acquired by 1974.

Over the years the Telephone Company of PEI had changed names several times. First it was the Island Telephone Company in 1929, then IslandTel in the 1980s, and then to the Island Telecom Inc. in 1988 to incorporate the introduction of both internet and mobility services. In 1999, Island Telecom merged with Atlantic Canadian telecommunication companies Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company, Bruncor, and NewTel Enterprises and was officially renamed in 2003 to Aliant. Aliant later merged with Bell Canada in 2006 to form Bell Aliant.
