DescriptionA soft-cover book titled “Micmac Legends of Prince Edward Island”. Front cover has a colour illustration on center left. Title is center right in large black font. In bottom left corner underneath the image is “Lennox Island Band Council”. The spine has two metal staples attached to interior pages. Back cover is white with the title located along the top center and an excerpt from the book in italics. On the bottom half are two columns, the right column has a synopsis of the book, and the left column is a description about the author with a small black and white photograph outlined in black to the right. The image on the front cover shows an Epekwitnewaq Mi'kmaw man crouching in high grass on the edge of a rocky cliff above water. The water has peaked waves with one large wave cresting away from the cliff towards the bust profile of a man with two dogs on either side. In the sky there is a full moon with many 8-pointed stars. There are streaks of yellow in the sky which connect to a piece of land in the distance.
The black and white photograph on the back cover shows the head and shoulders of John Joe Sark wearing a white button up shirt. He is smiling at the camera, is wearing large glasses, and has short hair.
Narrative
?Micmac Legends of Prince Edward Island? is a compilation of traditional legends as well as archival information on the community of Lennox Island. John Joe Sark (1945-2022) was born on Lennox Island and became the first Mi?kmaw person to graduate from the University of Prince Edward Island. In 1985 he became Keptin of the Mi'kmaq Nation. For many years Sark lobbied for the rights, recognition and increased understanding of Indigenous culture.?
