DescriptionA portable microscope with a lockable wooden travel case. A) A simple metal key, with teeth protruding from the side of the end and has a oval head. B) A dark wood-stained case with a metal handle on the top, the door has a metal lock on the left side and hinges on the right side. Inside the case is wood fittings to hold the microscope in place.
C) Microscope which sits on a U-shaped base. There is a small circular mirror attached at the bottom. The microscope has a metal platform with clips to hold the slides in place. It also has three lenses of various powers that have numbers and text on them. The underside of the platform has lens which can be lowered and swung out by a dial. There is a dial on the back handle. The dials has marked measurements and they raise and lower the lens heights. The eyepiece of the microscope is black.



Narrative
Made by Spencer Microscope Aloe Co., this portable microscope was donated by the Sisters of St. Martha. The Sisters had been involved in training Island nurses since 1925, when they assumed this responsibility at the Charlottetown Hospital. At this time, two hospitals operated in Charlottetown; the Charlottetown Hospital operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlottetown and the Prince Edward Island Hospital operated by the province.
