DescriptionA two-piece suit made of loose twill tweed, woven from very light weight single ply wool. The lining is a grey nylon. The suit has 3 bound button holes and self-covered square button as well as a side zipper. The jacket has front and back body darts, bust darts and back shoulder darts. The skirt has double waist darts on the front and a single waist darts at the back. This tweed is called PEI Tweed of Confederation Reg. No. 201-26503. Narrative
The year 1967 was a busy one for 19-year old Margaret (Peggy). She
married Garth Drummond after sewing both her wedding dress and this “going-away” suit, while also writing 16 exams to complete teacher training.
The PEI Tweed of Confederation was purchased by Peggy and Garth on a trip to visit family in PEI. Despite having a registration number, this particular tweed is highly elusive with little known about its inspiration. The orange and green colours probably reflect the Island's red soil and forested areas. Married in Toronto, the couple eventually settled on the Island and Peggy went on to teach for 33 years in Summerside.
