DescriptionA postcard with a black and white image of a Mi'kmaq family standing outside a wigwam. A man stands with his arms crossed at his chest while a woman sits on her heels to his right and child stands behind the man. There appears to be an example of bent wood furniture in the foreground of the image. There is black text in the top left corner of the image which reads "One of the Natives, Richmond, / near Summerside, P.E.I.". The reverse of the postcard is unused with "Published for The Red Cross Drug Store Summerside, P.E.I." present in small type along the left side. Narrative
The image featured on this postcard shows a Mi'kmaw family living at Richmond, PEI. Also seen here is an example of bent wood furniture similar to furniture made by people from Passamoquoddy First Nation. Passamoquoddy, Maliseet and Mi'kmaq peoples inhabited overlapping areas and it is highly likely that people, ideas and artistic styles moved between the groups of people. Some examples of this style of furniture have been made by Mi'kmaw furniture makers in Nova Scotia up until the 1970, first gaining popularity in the 1890s.
