Sometimes called the ?jerky of the sea,? dulse is an edible red or deep purple seaweed. Islanders have been consuming dulse for centuries. The Mi?kmaq used raw dulse for both nourishment when eaten fresh or dried, and medicinal purposes. The seaweed provides a great amount of protein and fiber, as well as vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy fatty acids. It grows wild in the northern Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and the harvesting time is usually low tide from early summer to early fall.
?
This particular bag of dulse is from Atlantic Mariculture, a company based out of Grand Manan. Harvested from Grand Manan?s Dark Harbour, this dulse is sun-dried until it reaches its crispy consistency.
