Narrative
The patent for the first Howe scale was obtained in 1856 by Frank M. Strong and Thomas Ross in Vermont, USA. Ross and Strong designed the first ball-bearing scale, placing the scale platform on metal balls enabling the platform to more freely while also providing additional protection and increased accuracy. In 1867, the Howe Scale took first prize at the Paris Exposition.  In 1873, the Howe Scale plant moved from Brandon to Rutland, Vermont. The Howe Scale Company went out of business in 1982.
