Narrative
Walter Shaw (1887-1981) served as Premier of PEI from 1959-1968. Born in West River, PEI, to Alexander Crawford Shaw and Isobel Maynard, Shaw attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown before enrolling in the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. From there, he studied at the Agricultural College in Guelph and in 1916 obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto. Shaw served in World War I within the 9th Siege Battery. Shaw's career outside of politics was dedicated to agriculture and was well known as a livestock breeder, judge, and editor of the journal "Farmers Guide". In 1957, Shaw became leader of the Progressive Conservative Party after having retired in 1954. Despite the election of a Liberal government in 1966, Shaw retained his seat and continued as Leader of the Opposition until 1972 when he retired from politics.
