DescriptionA rectangular metal license plate. The plate has rounded edges with a raised lip around outer edge. The front background is primarily green enamel with embossed raised numbers and letters. The white text which reads "Seat Belts Save TR1-490 Prince Edward Island" is enclosed by a white border. At the top right corner is a white square containing "78" in green indicating the year of issue. There are two curved rectangular holes along the top and bottom. The reverse of plate is white enamelled.
Narrative

Despite the inclusion of the slogan "Seat Belts Save" embossed onto this license plate, seat belts wouldn't be mandatory on PEI until 1987. Ontario was the first Canadian province in 1976 to mandate seat belts.
