Narrative
Records of the balmoral bonnet can be traced to the 16th century. It is a traditional Scottish hat that can be worn with formal or informal Highland dress. Also known as the "Kilmarnock banner" or "Kilmarnock cap", the hat's origins come from Balmoral Castle. They are traditionally knitted and milled to create a felted effect. On the left side is a grosgrain patch, often a rosette, to which a clan badge would be affixed. Grosgrain ribbon tails would be worn at the back as well as a wool pom-pom, or "toonie", at the crown.
