Narrative

The S.S. Harland operated from 1908-1936, replacing the City of London as a steamer ferry.? It provided the communities of Victoria, Orwell, Mt. Stewart and West River with transport to and from Charlottetown. The boat was owned by the Island Tug Company and was built by Joseph Gill in Shelbourne, NS. The Harland had a 33 horsepower steam engine, was 110 feet long, and managed an average speed of 10.5 knots. The S.S. Harland was specifically outfitted for excursions which was a common source of revenue for the Island Tug Company.

The S.S. Harland was reportedly named after the cousin of the managing director of the Island Tug Company, F.W. Hyndman.??
