Object numberHF.71.17.24.2
DescriptionRectangular paper product label for "Luna Brand" lobster. The multi-coloured label is horizontally oriented and divided into two sections of design. On the left is a central illustration of two lobsters facing a ship in the open water and they appear to be hiding on the beach behind some cliffs. One lobster is waving a flag which read "Give us a rest". On the right side is a square illustration with a green border. The top and bottom contain fable-like phrases about a bullfrog, wolves and lobsters. The sides have a Greek key pattern. The main illustration has diagonal band with the words "Luna Brand" split by a winking moon in a circle. A bullfrog sits above the band with a waxing crescent moon in the left lower side. Two wolves fighting over a lobster appear in the second below the diagonal band. The number "203" is handwritten in black on the reverse of label.
Narrative
This label has been attributed to William Critchlow Harris, well-known Island architect. For a brief period of time from 1880-1881, William bought a lobster cannery for his father to run. William is known to have designed other labels but this one may have been a design concept as any location information is lacking. If "Luna Brand" produced canned lobster, it wasn't wide spread or for a long period.
