DescriptionGreen steel helmet. Also known as a Brodie or Mark II helmet. The helmet has a canvas chin strap that is attached on either side of the helmet. The inside rim of the helmet is made of cardboard or wood that is covered with black canvas. At inside top of the helmet is a foam cushion for the head. Narrative
This style of helmet was first designed by John Leopold Brodie in 1915 for use by the British military during the First World War. The style of the helmet evolved over time but the protection provided by this helmet directly saved thousands of soldiers from fatal shrapnel head injuries. This helmet is a style from the Second World War, most likely a Mark II, as determined by the interior head support and elasticized chin strap.??
Production of these helmets began in Canada in 1940. They remained in service a part of the Canadian military uniform until the 1960s.
