The donor's surgical position with the Atlantic Veterinary College required that they continue to provide care to the animals at the college. This strike pass, along with a yellow "scarf", identified the donor as an essential worker, reducing any tensions associated with staff crossing the picket line. At the time, only the faculty were on strike so it was difficult to identify staff from different unions who weren't on strike.
The UPEI Faculty Association went on strike from March 20th to April 14th 2023. The final contract included compromises but also included highlights like hiring 20 additional full time faculty members, more support for sessional staff and an annual 3% wage increase for union members over 4 years.
