DescriptionA sampler on dark linen in mostly cross stitched wool and silk threads of various colours. The border of brown scroll and flowers. At the top in brown is an embroidered verse with a tree-like image topped with a grey animal. Below the verse is a horizontal row of 7 stemmed flowers with opposite leaves and four petals each, alternating in red, grey, white, and pink. At the center is embroidered in pink “Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth” with a row of small blue 8-pointed stars. In blue is embroidered “Mary Ellen Davies Aged 10 Years” above a landscape scene depicting four trees positioned around a white building with blue roof and spire and a smaller, white building with two chimneys on opposite sides of the blue roof. Three bird figures are present on top of three of the trees, one is yellow, one is pink, grey and white with an upturned tail, and the third is pink, brown and white with a long beak. The reverse of the sampler has a border of the backing fabric folded over a board, sewn diagonally with a slip stitch at the corners, and attached to the opposite side with white thread both vertically and horizontally.
