DescriptionWooden handled entrenching tool, inscribed with Edward Lucas/Wallace Patent. Blade is square with rounded corners, tapering at the upper end where it is capped by a cross-piece. At the lower end is a strap-like piece of metal that extends to form spade. The short handle is topped by a metal piece that has both a pick and a hammer. On the under-side of the shovel the metal "strap" is secured by five rivets arranged in a "V" shape. On the side of the handle is an eye hook.Narrative
This entrenching tool is one of a set, used to ditch trenches during the Boer War. The tools are compact and comprise several tools in one making it multi-use. This shovel were donated by Rev. Mr. Fullerton who served as Army Chaplain.
