Frank Harold MacArthur (1886-1981) was born in Cornwall, PEI. At age 14 he quit school and left the Island and headed to western Canada. After being rejected by the army, MacArthur worked his way across Canada and the U.S. working a variety of jobs including as a hotel manager in Florida, a private chauffeur in Massachusetts, and as a store keeper in Alaska.
MacArthur began his writing career in 1939 and gained recognition from both Canadian and American publications.? In 1973 he received the PEI Centennial Committee award and in 1975 MacArthur received recognition from Queen Elizabeth II for a story published in the London Times. He also wrote under the pen name "Uncle Joe".
Legends of Prince Edward Island was first published in 1966 and has over 2,000 copies sold.
