DescriptionA bark and quillwork medallion on a thin leather thong - part of 2023 Canada Games mascot. The medallion is circular with grey-green colour welima’qewe’l msiku (sweetgrass) around the exterior edge held in place with crisscrossing thread. The center of the medallion features a Mi'kmaq star filled with green, red, and white striped chevrons with a white boarder made with quills. Between the star points, a pattern of “x’s” in red, white, and green fills the space. The reverse of the medallion is birch bark with dark stripes across the surface. At the bottom edge in black is written “Noella Moore / PE 2021”. The thong is anchored between the layers of birch bark with alternating wooden and plastic beads red, green, and white in colour. The two ends of the thong are tied in a knot at the top. Narrative
The 2023 Canada Games Committee held a Island wide contest in the spring of 2021 among school age children to find a mascot for the 2023 Canada Games. 1,200 entries were received from 45 different schools, and in November 2021 it was announced that Myla Doucette's mascot "Wowkwis" (Mi'kmaq for "red-fox") was the winner and Doucette was able to meet the mascot in real-life. Wowkwis features a jersey, hat, mitts and shoes in the same colours as the official colours of the 2023 Canada Games in addition to a birch bark and quillwork medallion made by Noella Moore, a Mi'kmaw artist from PEI.
